MAY 2001

Community Pool Opens This Month!
Here we go again! Summer is bearing down upon us and the pool will be opening on May 25th this year at 5:00 pm!! Pool passes must be obtained in advance and extended office hours will be available for that purpose. PLEASE NOTE: The pool monitors cannot issue pool passes and I will not issue them from my home, so PLEASE make sure you get your passes during regular or extended office hours. I will also be glad to meet you at the office-by appointment only- at a different time if your schedule requires it, but the office is the only place you can get your pass. A complete set of pool rules and hours will be distributed to each family when the passes are issued, but a parent must sign for the passes for their family.

Every year there is some confusion about minor children coming to swim without their parents so I want to clarify our guidelines on this. Because there is not a lifeguard on duty at our pool, we have established a minimum age for children to swim without being accompanied by a parent. Additionally, in order for an under-age child to be allowed in the pool in the care of someone other than their parent, a signed consent form for that child listing the responsible adult must be presented to the pool monitor when they come to swim. A copy of this consent form is available in the office.

I realize that some work schedules make it tough to find time for the kids to swim and then, when mom and dad do get home, they don’t always want to swim when the kids do-which is all the time in the summer! Hopefully, this provision will make it easier for everyone to use and enjoy the pool this summer. I know it will make it easier on our pool monitors if everyone understands this in advance. It’s so hard to see those sad, disappointed little faces when they find out they can’t swim. It is our goal that the pool be a safe and pleasant place for our residents to relax and swim. Our guidelines and monitors are in place to make sure that happens! ENJOY!!!

Here’s When You Can Get Those Pool Passes!
We will begin handing out pool passes during regular office hours the week of May 14th-May 18th. The office will also be open until 8: 00 pm on the 21st, 22nd and 25th of May for anyone who can’t make it by during regular hours. I will also be available in the office on Saturday morning the 26th from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Everyone who visits the pool must have a pass in order to enter the pool area so make note of this schedule so you won’t be left behind! If the extended hours listed above don’t work with your schedule, please call the office and I will arrange to meet with you.

2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 bay leaf
3/4 cup olive oil
3/4 cup beef broth
1 1/2 pounds sirloin, cut into
1 1/2-inch pieces
1 green bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
1 red onion
12 medium mushrooms, stems removed

1) Mix salt, pepper, garlic, thyme, oregano, bay leaf, olive oil and beef broth in a shallow dish. Reserve about 1/3 of the marinade. Add beef to the dish, toss to coat, cover tightly and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

2) Preheat grill or broiler. Remove stems, membranes and seeds from bell peppers. Cut onions and peppers into 1-inch pieces.

3) Drain beef. Discard bay leaf and marinade in dish. Place beef, mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions alternately onto skewers.

4) Grill or broil kebabs, turning and basting frequently with reserved
marinade, for about 15 minutes for medium doneness.

  • Cooking Variation: For a „surf-and-turf‰ version, reduce the amount of beef used by half and add 1 pound of large shrimp to the kebabs!
  • Quick Tips: For quicker cleanup, marinate the beef in a plastic bag instead of a dish AND
  • Make Ahead: Marinate the beef and assemble the kebabs according to the directions 1 day ahead. Wrap each kebab in plastic wrap and keep refrigerated until time to cook! ENJOY!

    Johanna Woods Salutes Mothers!
Each May a Sunday is designated to honor our moms. Now, of course, being a mom I think this is an absolutely marvelous plan! But I think it would be marvelous even if I weren’t a mom, because I had a mom and I know how much of themselves they devote to their families. If you caught the past tense in that previous sentence you have probably figured out that my mom isn’t around anymore-and I miss her. Moms are unique people in our lives. Who else would do so much for so many people with relatively little thanks for it? Who else would give up hours of sleep with a newborn and feel like that first smile was ample reward? Who else works tirelessly cooking, cleaning doing the laundry but still finds time to put a few flowers in the yard-in between taking kids to ball practice, sewing on a button and kissing a scraped elbow? Moms are a precious and priceless part of life no matter what age you are. Be sure and tell your mom how much you appreciate her as often as you can-while you can! Happy Mother’s Day to all our Moms! And Thanks!

Free Dump Day In Broken Arrow
Since everyone is doing their Spring Cleaning right now the City of Broken Arrow would like to help. They will be having a free dump day on Saturday, May 5th from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Just take your throwaway items to the Public Works Facility at 1700 W. Detroit and they will take them off your hands. This is the same place you picked up your trash bags in April. You can bring almost anything except hazardous materials or liquids and throw it all away for free! What a great deal! So get out there and clean out that storage building, empty that closet in the spare bedroom and get that „STUFF‰ out from under the bed! If you have any questions about whether or not they will accept certain items, you can call 251-5311 and find out for sure so you don’t waste a trip! Clean, clean, clean!!!

Free Johanna Woods Dump Day—For Johanna Woods Only…
And just in case you can’t get everything down to the city yard on their dump day, we will be having another Johanna Woods dump day on May 12th! That way you can finish up or if you are a procrastinator, like me, you can put it off for one more week! We will have the storage yard open and will be taking your „STUFF‰ from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Just pull up in the yard and someone from Johanna Woods will be there to assist you. Please remember that we will also be unable to accept any liquids, flammable or hazardous materials. But you can bring just about anything else!

    Calling All Pet Owners!

Spring is here and everyone loves to enjoy the cool of the evening with a leisurely walk around the community. Our pets love it, too, but unfortunately some of our pets (as well as their owners) don’t respect the lawns and property of others. I have had several complaints already this year of unwanted „gifts‰ being left on lawns. If you walk your dogs you must pick up after them. Not everyone is a pet owner and whether you are or you aren’t no one that I know wants to „find‰ a gift like this in their yard! Please be a responsible pet owner and help your neighbors out with this. Everyone will appreciate it!
