Summertime—For Real?
Could it finally be warming up-for real?  It’s been sort of a cool year so far, so who knows what’s ahead this year.  As summer approaches,  the streets start filling up with kids who just want to have fun!  School will be out soon and activity all around Johanna Woods will be increasing.  Our community is made up of people of all ages and every resident has the right, within the rules and law, to live quietly and peacefully in their homes.  Unfortunately, our youngest residents don’t always take this into consideration when they are looking for a ball game or skateboard location.  So, we need our grown-up residents to spend time with the kids going over some summertime basics.  Here they are: 1) Traffic ALWAYS has priority.  Children must move out of the street when traffic approaches.  The roads were built for cars, not skateboards, bikes or four-square games. 2) An empty drive-way is NOT for skateboarding or bike riding.  No matter how awesome the slope is!  Please teach your children to respect the property of others and not trespass on or through it.  3)  There is not enough room between homes to play kick ball, football or baseball.   A ball cannot be controlled when it is kicked or batted, so please do not risk damaging a neighbors’ home or yard by playing these games in small areas.  A playground has been provided with ample room for all of these activities.

Johanna Woods Pool Opens May 27th
As we have done for many years now, the office will be open for extended hours to sign folks up and issue pool passes, before the pool officially opens.  You can get your passes any day during office hours beginning, Saturday, May 21st.  Extended hours are as follows:  Monday evening May 23rd, until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 24th until 8:00 PM and Friday, May 27th until 9:00 PM.  Passes may only be checked out by adult residents and will only be issued at the office.  Pool monitors cannot issue pool passes.  No one will be admitted to the Johanna Woods pool unless they have a current pool pass.  The pool opens for the summer at 5:00 PM, May 27th, weather permitting.  Guests to Johanna Woods must be accompanied by a resident and have a guest pass in order to swim.  Come see us!

Our American Heritage
“Abraham Lincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should therefore be slaves.  Likewise, we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide.  My administration is dedicated to the preservation of America as a free land, and there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning.”  Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th President of the United States from his profound work, entitled “Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation”.  From America’s God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations, Wm J. Federer

Cooks Corner
Angel-Pineapple-Coconut Cake
 Ingredients:
1—16 oz. Angel Food Cake mix
1—20 oz. Can crushed pineapple in 100% pineapple juice
1 1/2 cups angel flake coconut, divided
1 teaspoon almond extract—optional, but good!
1—8 oz. Container Cool Whip topping, thawed.

Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 350º.  Take a large mixing bowl and put cake mix, pineapple, 1 cup of coconut and almond extract into bowl.  With a wire whisk, mix by hand until foamy, about 1 minute.  Pour this mixture into an ungreased 13×9-inch baking pan.  Bake for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 3 minutes.  Then turn upside down on a rack until completely cooled.  Once it has cooled, spread the Cool Whip onto the cake.  In a small skillet over medium heat, toast the remaining 1/2 cup of coconut.  Allow it to cool and then sprinkle this on top of the Cool Whip. Note:  Do not bake according to package directions, bake according to recipe directions only!

Resident Updates
Along with this newsletter, is a copy of our Resident Information Sheet.  Every year we ask our residents to make sure that we have correct phone numbers and residency information.  This is important in case we need to reach you in the event of an emergency.  Nowadays, people change phone numbers and even jobs with some regularity and we need to make sure our records are current.  Please take a moment to complete this form and turn it back into the office with your rent.  We will take good care of your information.  Thank you for your help with this!

Does Your Home Need A Bath?
Have you ever noticed how much brighter and prettier our world looks after a good rain?  The trees are greener, flowers are brighter and everything looks fresher!  A  good rain washes the dust off the leaves and plants and we all enjoy the result.  Over time, our houses get dirty from constant exposure to the elements and need to be washed off.  If your home needs to be power washed, give us a call at the office and we can put you in touch with folks who can help!

Home Inspections Wrapping Up
In spite of the rain, wind and cooler weather, the first round of inspections is complete—or very close!  If you have not received your initial report, please call the office so we can get another copy out to you.  We have done home inspections for many years now and as a result, most of us do not have major work to do.  That’s a good thing!  We also try to give you a little notice if you are going to need major improvements so you can plan ahead.  The appearance of Johanna Woods as a whole and the value of each of our homes is enhanced when ALL of our homes look their best.  We appreciate all of you who work so hard on your homes and yards.  Everyone who has work to do has been given a set time frame for the follow up inspection.  Please begin to take care of the needed work so we can mark you “done”!
