Warning – Intersection of Hot and Cold Air Ahead!
Although Memorial Day marks the official start of summer, May and June can be two of our stormiest months.  With the weather being back and forth between the hot and cold temperatures, it’s easy to feel like we are caught in the middle of an atmospheric tug of war.  And, truly, we are.  Warm humid temperatures can pump tremendous moisture and instability into the atmosphere.  Add a stubborn blast of cold air to the mix and look out!  We did not see a lot of rain or storms in April, but don’t let your guard down.  As we head into summer, please continue to pay close attention to the weather anytime there is a threat of severe storms.  When conditions are right for stormy weather, things can go from bad to worse quickly and if you aren’t aware of changing weather conditions, you could be in trouble.  The name “Tornado Alley” has been used in the past to refer to the plain states, from the Dakotas all the way down to Texas.  This has historically been the prime area for tornado formation in the spring and early summer months.  It has been expanded in recent years to include more states to the east, but Oklahoma has a prominent place right in the middle.  Not a happy distinction for us, but a fact that we need to be aware of none the less.  So, enjoy the warmer temperatures, but always pay close attention to the weather when storms threaten and don’t wait until the last minute to seek shelter.  Stay safe!

Johanna Woods Pool Opens May 23rd
As we have done for many years now, the office will be open for extended hours to sign folks up and issue pool passes, before the pool officially opens.  You can get your passes any day during office hours beginning Saturday, May 17th.  Extended hours are as follows:  Monday evening May 19th, until  8:00 PM,  Tuesday, May 20th until 8:00 PM and Friday, May 23rd until 9:00 PM.  Passes may only be checked out by adult residents and will only be issued at the office.  Pool monitors cannot issue pool passes.  No one will be admitted to the Johanna Woods pool unless they have a current pool pass.  The pool opens for the summer at 5:00 PM, May 23rd, weather permitting.  Guests to the Johanna Woods pool must be with a resident who has a guest pass in order to swim.  Come see us!

Sad Neighbor News
In April, neighbor Harold Tanis kept his final appointment.  Our prayers continue with Mrs. Tanis.  Also, for those who remember former maintenance man Floyd Jackson, he also passed into eternity in April.

Congratulations to Scott Clayton!  He won the April gift card drawing!

Our American Heritage
“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts the Affairs of men more than the People of the United States.  Every step, by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation, seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.”  George Washington, from his First Inaugural Address, April 30, 1789
“The hour is fast approaching, on which the Honor and Success of this army and the safety of our bleeding Country depend.  Remember officers and Soldiers, that you are Freemen, fighting for the blessings of Liberty and that slavery will be your portion, and that of your posterity, if you do not acquit yourselves like men.”  George Washington, General Orders, August 23, 1776
“The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshipping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights.”  George Washington, to the Annual meeting of Quakers, September 1789

Cook’s Corner
No Bake Peanut Butter Pie

1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup whipping cream
1 9inch commercial graham cracker crust
2 tbsp. chopped salted peanuts

Combine softened cream cheese and sugar, beating on medium speed of mixer until smooth.  Add peanut butter and vanilla to this mixture and beat well.  Set aside.  Beat the whipping cream until soft peaks form and fold this into the peanut butter mixture.  Spoon this into the graham cracker crust and sprinkle with the chopped nuts.  Refrigerate and chill for at least 3 hours.  For a really decadent dessert, drizzle a little chocolate syrup over each piece as it is served.  It’s an attractive garnish and it’s chocolate, so it will only make it taste better!  Yield:  One 9 inch pie.

Resident Updates
Along with this newsletter, is a copy of our Resident Information Sheet.  Every year we ask our resident’s to make sure that we have correct phone numbers and residency information.  This is important in case we need to reach you in the event of an emergency.  Nowadays, people change phone numbers and even jobs with some regularity and we need to make sure our records are current.  Please take a moment to complete this form and turn it back into the office with your rent.  We will take good care of your information.  Thank you for your help with this!

Initial Inspections Are Done!
In spite of the rain, wind and cooler weather, the first round of inspections is complete!  If you have not received your initial report, please call the office so we can get another copy out to you.  We have done home inspections for many years now and as a result, most of us do not have major repairs to make.  We also try to provide some notice
if major improvements are going to be needed so you can plan ahead.  The appearance of Johanna Woods as a whole and the value of each of our homes is enhanced when ALL of our homes are well maintained.  We appreciate all of you who work so hard on your homes and yards.  Everyone who has work to do has been given a time  frame for the follow up inspection.  Please begin to take care of your chores now so we can mark you “done”!  Thanks again and if you have any questions, please give us a call anytime.

Does Your Home Need A Bath?
Have you ever noticed how much brighter and prettier our world looks after a good rain?  The trees are greener, flowers are brighter and everything looks fresher!  A  good rain washes the dust off the leaves and plants and we all enjoy the result.  Over time, our houses get dirty from constant exposure to the elements and also need to be washed off.  If your home needs to be power washed, give us a call at the office and we can put you in touch with folks who can help!
