May 2017 Newsletter

One Stormy Month Down, Two to Go!
April, May and June are historically the prime severe weather months in Oklahoma.  While tornadoes are certainly not limited to those months, this three month period is when the conditions are most favorable for tornadoes to form.  In order of potential danger, May is actually the month with the greatest likelihood of the worst and most dangerous weather.  April takes second place and June comes in last.  So, please be very conscious of the weather as we enter May.  If you have lived in Oklahoma for very long you know that dangerous storms can form quite suddenly and we must all be paying attention when there is even a chance for that those storms could become tornadic.  Modern technology provides much better storm prediction accuracy, but it can never pinpoint exactly where a storm is going to form.  If you are new to our community and are not sure where the shelters are, now is the time to find out!  If you are not sure which shelter you have been assigned to, please call the office.  Once you know the location, please DO NOT wait until the last minute to seek shelter!  If we have to lock the doors on the above ground shelters we want you to already be inside!  Let’s be prepared for whatever May brings!

Home Inspections – Underway!
The first round of inspections is off to a slow start, but everyone should have their initial report by May 20th.  If you have not received yours by then, please call the office so we can get another copy out to you.  We have done home inspections for many years now and as a result, most folks should only have minor work to do.  We also try to give you advance notice when major repairs will be needed for the following year so you can plan well in advance for that expense. The appearance of Johanna Woods as a whole and the value of each of our homes is greatly enhanced when ALL of our homes are neat and well maintained.  We appreciate all of you who work so hard on your homes and yards each year.  Everyone who has work to do has been given a reasonable time frame for completing those chores.  As the weather permits—let’s get at it!

Coming Soon!
As weather and other community priorities allow, work behind the office continues. Plans for the new amenity are also being finalized! We hope to have a picture and much more information on this new amenity in the next newsletter so stay tuned!

Our American Heritage
“Honor, justice, and humanity, call upon us to hold, and to transmit to our posterity, that liberty which we received from our ancestors.  It is not our duty to leave wealth to our children, but it is our duty to leave liberty to them.”
“Let us take care of our rights and we therein take care of our prosperity.  Slavery is ever preceded by sleep.”
“Kings or parliaments could not give the rights essential to happiness… We claim them from a higher source—from the King of kings, and Lord of all the earth.  They are not
annexed to us by parchments and seals.  They are created in us by the decrees of Providence, which establish the laws of our nature.  They are born with us; exist with us; and cannot be taken from us by any human power, without taking our lives.”
Quotations from John Dickenson, 1732—1808. Known as “The Penman of the Revolution”, he was prominent in many areas of our early American History.

Cook’s Corner
Incredible Honey Garlic Pork Chops
1/2 cup ketchup
2  2/3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, crushed
6 (4 ounce) (1-inch thick) pork chops
Preheat the grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate.  Whisk the ketchup, honey, soy sauce and garlic together to make a glaze.  Sear the pork chops on both sides on the preheated grill.  Lightly brush the glaze onto each side of the chops as they cook and grill until they are no longer pink in the center, about 7 to 9 minutes per side.  If using a meat thermometer, cook until the center temperature reads 145 degrees F.  Oh yes!  It’s that time of year!
