It's Summertime!
The days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, it's getting warmer and the streets are filling up with kids who just want to have fun!  What a great time of year.  School will be out soon and activity all around Johanna Woods will be increasing.  Our community is comprised of people of all ages and every resident has the right, within the rules and law, to live quietly and peacefully in their homes.  Our youngest residents don't always take this into consideration when they are looking for a ball game or skateboard location.  So,  we need for our grown-up residents to spend some time with your kids going over some summertime basics. Here are some areas to discuss:

  1. Traffic ALWAYS has the right of way.  Children must move out of the street when traffic approaches. The roads were made for cars, not skateboards, bikes or four-square games.
  2. An empty drive-way is NOT to skateboard in or ride down on your bike.  No matter how awesome the slope is! Please teach your children to respect the property of others and not trespass on it.
  3. There is not enough room between homes to play kick ball, football or baseball.
A playground has been provided with ample room for these type of games.  Please do not risk damaging a neighbors home with a ball that cannot be controlled when it is kicked or batted.  It's our community, let's all work together to enjoy it!

Johanna Woods Pool Opens May 23rd
As we have done for several years now, the office will be open for extended hours to sign folks up and issue pool passes, prior to the opening of the pool. You can get your passes during office hours any day beginning Saturday, May 17th. Extended hours are as follows: Monday evening May 19th, until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20th until 8:00 PM and Friday, May 23rd until 9:00 PM. Passes may only be checked out by adult residents and will only be issued from the office. Pool monitors cannot issue pool passes. No one will be admitted to the Johanna Woods pool unless they have a current pool pass. The pool opens for the summer at 5:00 PM, May 23rd, weather permitting. Guests must be accompanied by a resident and have a guest pass to swim. Come see us!

Storm Debris Removal
We are almost done! As of the writing of this newsletter, we are waiting for the City of Broken Arrow to make a final pass through our community to pick up the debris stacks that are on the curbs. Johanna Woods was among the first neighborhoods that they came through and picked up in and we did not even have all of our tree work done. We are paying them to come back and pick up the rest. Please make sure that you do not put trash that needs to be collected on your debris stack. Also, if you have a little stack of small twigs that could fit in a trash bag, it would be helpful if you would go ahead and bag that up for routine collection. We are finishing clearing the community park and then later in the year, we will begin grinding stumps. If you have ruts in your yard, please call the office so we can get you on a list to bring some dirt out and take care of this. It was impossible to avoid making ruts during the clean up of the limbs, but we will help get them filled in so you can mow. With 240 home-sites, we just need to know who needs help with this particular item. Anything you can do to help keep your yard looking as neat as possible until the debris stacks are gone will be greatly appreciated!

Outdoor Cooks Corner:
Chicken & Bacon Shish Kabobs

Ingredients:
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cub cider vinegar
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons canola oil
10 large mushrooms, cut in half
2 green onions, minced skewers
Yield: 6 servings
3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves -cut into chunks
1/2 pound bacon, thick cut, sliced, cut in half
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained

Directions: In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, cider vinegar, honey, canola oil and onions. Add the chicken chunks and mushrooms to this mixture and stir to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. When ready to cook, preheat the grill for high heat cooking. Wrap the chicken chunks with bacon and thread onto the skewers so that the bacon is secured. Alternate with mushroom halves and pineapple chunks. Lightly oil the grill grate and arrange the skewers on it. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, brushing occasionally with the remaining marinade mixture. Cook until the bacon is crisp and chicken juices run clear. Enjoy!

Resident Resources
Wouldn't it be great if we could plan everything that happens or if we could know when something was going to break down? Things like this always seem to happen when we have the least amount of money, time, or both, to deal with them. And we all live busy lives, so often dealing with the "extras" that make their way into our schedule can be fairly stressful. Over the years, Johanna Woods has worked with numerous service providers and we often work with them on a continual basis. As a result, in many cases, we can provide our residents with a ready list of business and service professionals who work with issues relating to manufactured housing. Need to find someone in the community to help with lawn chores? Give us a call. Considering re-financing your home? We can help. How about plumbing, electrical or heating and air problem? We work with people who specialize in provide them for reasonable rates. When you have a problem, a call to us might save you some time — and some money!

Free Dump Day In Broken Arrow
Since many of us are doing our Spring cleaning right now, you will be glad to know that the City of Broken Arrow wants to help! They will be having a free dump day on Saturday, May 3rd, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Just take your throw-away items to the Public Works Facility at 1700 W. Detroit and they will take them off your hands. This is the same place you picked up your trash bags in April. You can take them just about anything, with the exception of hazardous materials or liquids and get rid of it for free! This is a great opportunity to get rid of a lot of “stuff” all at one time and get your Spring cleaning out of the way early. If you have any questions about items they will accept or not, you can call 251-5311 and find out for sure! Get busy and get rid of that “stuff” that you don't use and don't need any longer!

"Pet" Peeves
We've all got 'em. It's different things for different folks, but all of us have something-or more than one thing-that really pushes our button. One of my biggest ones is hearing a dog bark... and bark... and bark about the time my head hits the pillow at night. Or the car that drives by with the music and bass so loud that it rattles the windows. How about walking out in the front yard and finding a "gift" that has been left by one of your four-footed neighbors? That's a thrill. Whatever your specific "pet peeve" is, we must all be careful that our actions don't raise the ire of our neighbors. And pay attention to your pets and pick up after them. Make sure that your pet is not your neighbor's "pet peeve"! We can all enjoy a peaceful, quiet, calm community with friendly and happy neighbors-but we have to work at it!
