Newsletter & Calendar - July 2008

Happy Birthday - U.S.A!!
Our country will be 232 years old this July 4th! As nations go, we are still fairly young, but we have certainly come a long way from where we began. Arguably, not all of the ìprogressî has been good for our country. Nonetheless, we hope that everyone will take a few moments over the holidays to reflect on the great privilege it is to live in a free country. As you do, keep in mind that it is illegal to discharge fireworks in the city limits of Broken Arrow WITHOUT A PERMIT and Johanna Woods IS in the city limits. Permits that will allow you to legally discharge fireworks are available for a $20.00 fee and can be obtained at the Nienhuis Park on Lynn Lane or at City Hall. Purchases can be made between 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please realize that even with a permit, there are restrictions as to the dates and hours that fireworks are legal in the city limits. Please make sure you understand everything so you don't break the law. Fireworks must be discharged on a non-combustible surface, not closer than 25 feet to any structure. And, if you litter the street or yard, be prepared to thoroughly clean up the mess when you are done.

Gas Saving Tips
With oil prices at record highs, here are some easy and practical ways to help conserve fuel and get the most for your gas dollar:

  1. Purchase gasoline during the coolest times of the day, early morning or late at night. Gas is sold by volume and heat causes gas vapors to expand. As a result, you will get more gas for your money by taking advantage of this timing tip.
  2. Pull into parking spaces so you can leave without backing up as often as you can.
  3. Clean out the car and trunk! Extra weight will decrease your fuel efficiency.
  4. If you are going to be idling for more than 20 seconds, turn your car off.
  5. Evaluate your driving routes. The shortest distance may not be the most efficient if you have to start and stop a lot.
  6. Check your tire pressure and make sure your air filter is clean. Small changes in your driving habits and practices can mean real savings over time.

County Elections Scheduled for July
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Primary elections, scheduled for Tuesday, July 29th. On the ballot will be a race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Jim Inhofe, the U.S. Representative seat for District 1, which is currently held by John Sullivan and the Oklahoma State Representative seat in District 98, John Trebilcock, incumbent. Some Wagoner County offices will also be contested. VOTE!

1/3 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon steak sauce
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

The Grass is Growing and growing...and growing!
And it's been raining and raining and raining!
It's been tough to keep up with lawn care this year- for everyone. Just a reminder about how our lawn care action notices work. We tour the community every Friday morning specifically looking at the condition of lawns. Those that are really overdue for care are identified and lawn notices are distributed. Most of the time, if a lawn is out of hand, it is because the homeowner has been busy, or maybe the weather schedule has not cooperated. However, if you receive a lawn care notice and there is a problem that has prevented you from taking care of your lawn, please give us a call at the office. We will be glad to give you an extra day or two-but not a week! Please realize that if you get a mow tag, you received it because your lawn needs to be mowed. Don't take it personally, no one is upset with you, you just need to mow your lawn! If you need some help with your lawn care chores, keep reading. There are folks available who will be happy to help!

Johanna Woods Summer Maintenance Hours Begin
It sure didn't take long for those temperatures to shoot up into the nineties once June arrived! With the increasingly warm temperatures, our maintenance crew has changed to their summer work hours to beat the heat a little. They start work now at 7:00 am each morning and end their day at 4:00 pm in the afternoon. Please keep this in mind if you have a maintenance type problem. You will need to call a little earlier in the day. And be patient with us if you hear a weed eater in the creek around 7:00 am! It gets hot and sticky outside in a hurry these days!

Hot Weather Energy Saving Tips
With the heat on and energy costs higher than ever, we are all looking for ways to stay cool without taking out a second mortgage. Here are a few simple, and free, steps you can take that might make a big difference on your electric bill each month:
  • Turn the thermostat up to 81 or 82 degrees while no one is home. You can save 1 to 3% per degree, for each degree over 72 degrees.
  • Only run your dishwasher when it is full and turn off the dry cycle so the dishes air dry. This can save 1%.
  • Always use cold water to rinse clothes in the washer. This can save up to 4%!
